What moves the price

Post type

Steel pipe posts set in concrete are the longest-lived choice — 40+ years — and they don't rot at the ground line. Pressure-treated 4×6 posts last 15–20 years and cost $4–$7 less per linear foot. Cedar 4×4 posts rot at grade in 8–10 years; we don't recommend them.

Picket grade

Use #2 or better cedar pickets — kiln-dried where possible. The wet, knotty pickets sold at big-box stores warp the first summer in Texas heat. The price difference at the lumberyard is small; the lifespan difference is huge.

Post depth and concrete

Holes go 30" deep minimum, 10" wide, with 6" of gravel at the bottom for drainage and concrete mounded above grade so water sheds away from the post. Shallow holes set in dirt are how cheap fences fall over in 3–5 years.

Style — dog-ear, board-on-board, horizontal

Standard dog-ear is the budget choice. Board-on-board (overlapping pickets so there are no gaps when the wood shrinks) adds ~15%. Horizontal modern style with 1×6 cedar slats adds 25–40%. Top caps and trim boards add $3–$6 per linear foot.

Gates and hardware

A wood gate frame sags in two years. We build with welded steel frames clad in matching cedar — they stay square. Heavy-duty hinges (3 per gate, lag-bolted into 6×6 posts), drop rods, and magnetic latches all live on the quote.

Common questions

How long will a cedar fence last in San Antonio?
Cedar pickets last 15–20 years with stain refreshed every 4–5 years. Steel pipe posts last 40+ years. Pressure-treated wood posts 15–20. Stained every 4–5 years, the whole fence holds its color and tightness.
Do I need a permit for a fence in San Antonio?
Most residential fences under 8 feet tall don't need a city permit, but most HOAs do require approval. We check before starting and pull a permit if your jurisdiction or HOA requires one.
Will you remove my old fence?
Yes — tear-out, haul-off, and disposal are included in every F-I-X quote unless you tell us you want the wood. There's no separate demo charge.
Can you stain or seal the fence after install?
Yes. Most San Antonio cedar fences are left raw for 30–60 days to dry, then sealed with a penetrating semi-transparent stain. Sealing on day one traps moisture and shortens picket life. Stain pricing runs $1.75–$2.75 per linear foot.
