Choosing the right decking material in Texas

Pressure-treated pine is the budget pick — strong, easy to replace boards, and it takes stain well, but it needs re-sealing every 2–3 years or it'll cup and crack. Western red cedar is the middle ground — naturally rot- and bug-resistant, beautiful grain, and it stays cooler underfoot than composite. Composite (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon) costs roughly 2–3x pressure-treated up front, but you'll never sand or stain it; the trade-off is dark colors get hot in July sun, so I steer clients toward lighter tones for full-sun decks.

What lives under the boards matters more than the boards

I see a lot of decks where the surface looks fine and the framing is rotting underneath. I build with proper joist spacing (16" on center for most decks, 12" for picture-frame composite), galvanized or stainless hardware, joist-tape on every joist top to keep water out of the screw holes, and ledger flashing tied into the house wrap. Footings are dug to code depth and poured — no surface blocks.

Permits, railings, and code

Anything over 30" off the ground in San Antonio needs a permit, guardrails at 36", and balusters spaced so a 4" sphere can't pass through. Stairs need handrails on graspable profiles. I pull the permit, schedule the inspections, and hand you the final paperwork — that protects you when you sell the house.

Add-ons that change a deck

Built-in benches with hidden storage, planter boxes integrated into the rail, recessed deck lighting on the stair risers, a pergola for afternoon shade, and a cable or aluminum-baluster rail upgrade are the four upgrades clients tell me they're glad they did. We can scope any of these into the original quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a deck cost in San Antonio?
Pressure-treated runs roughly $25–$40 per square foot installed; cedar $35–$55; composite $55–$90 depending on brand and railing system. Multi-level or elevated decks add about 20–30% over single-level.
How long will my deck last?
Pressure-treated 15–20 years with regular sealing. Cedar 20–30 years. Composite 25+ years (most carry 25-year warranties). The framing — built right with treated lumber and proper flashing — outlasts the boards.
Do you pull the permit?
Yes, on any deck that requires one. I handle the permit application, the inspections, and give you the closed-out paperwork.
Can you tie a new deck into my existing house?
Absolutely. I flash the ledger board into the house wrap so water can't get behind it — that's the #1 thing that rots a back wall over time.
How long does it take to build?
A standard 200–400 sq ft single-level deck is 4–7 working days from demo to stain. Permits add a week or two on the front end.
