Choosing the right decking material in Texas
Pressure-treated pine is the budget pick — strong, easy to replace boards, and it takes stain well, but it needs re-sealing every 2–3 years or it'll cup and crack. Western red cedar is the middle ground — naturally rot- and bug-resistant, beautiful grain, and it stays cooler underfoot than composite. Composite (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon) costs roughly 2–3x pressure-treated up front, but you'll never sand or stain it; the trade-off is dark colors get hot in July sun, so I steer clients toward lighter tones for full-sun decks.
