Why cedar — and which grade

Western red cedar is the standard San Antonio privacy fence material because it resists rot and insects naturally. Grade matters: I use #2 or better dog-ear pickets, not the wet, knotty boards you see at big-box stores that warp the first summer. For posts, I use steel pipe set in concrete (40+ year life) or 4x6 pressure-treated (15–20 years). Cedar 4x4 posts rot at the ground line in 8–10 years — I don't recommend them.

Posts done right

Holes go 30" deep minimum, 10" wide, with 6" of gravel at the bottom for drainage. Concrete is mounded above grade so water sheds away from the post, not into it. Posts are spaced 8' on center and braced plumb until the concrete sets. This is where most cheap fences fail in 3–5 years — undersized, undepth holes and posts set in dirt.

Gates that don't sag

A wood gate frame will sag in two years. I build gates with welded steel frames and clad them with the same cedar pickets, so they look like the rest of the fence but stay square. Heavy-duty hinges (3 per gate, lag-bolted into 6x6 posts) and a drop rod or magnetic latch.

Ranch and ag fencing

Out in the Hill Country I do barbed wire, field fence, no-climb horse fence, and pipe-and-cable for entrances. Cedar stays at the corners and entrances; T-post in between. Cattle guards and entry gates with stone columns are common upgrades.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cedar privacy fence cost?
6' cedar fence with steel posts runs roughly $32–$45 per linear foot installed in San Antonio. 8' is $42–$58. Custom gates $400–$1,200 each depending on size and hardware.
How long will it last?
Cedar pickets 15–20 years. Steel posts 40+ years. Pressure-treated wood posts 15–20 years. Stained every 4–5 years, the whole fence holds its color.
Do I need a permit?
Most San Antonio fences under 8' don't need a permit, but HOA approval is often required. I'll check before starting.
Will you remove my old fence?
Yes — tear-out, haul-off, and disposal are included in every quote unless you tell me you want the wood.
Can you match my neighbor's fence?
Absolutely. Bring me a picture or just point at it — I'll match style, height, and picket pattern so it looks like one fence.
