Red iron (welded steel I-beam) is the heavy-duty choice — 50+ year life, handles wide clear spans (60'+), and the standard for shops, barndominiums, and any building you're putting living space in. Post-frame (pole barn, wood columns with metal cladding) costs less, goes up faster, and works great for hay barns, equipment cover, and basic storage. I'll match the structure to what you're actually using it for.
Most metal building suppliers sell you the kit and walk away. I do the whole package: pad and engineered slab, anchor bolts placed to spec, building erection, roll-up and walk doors, windows, gutters, and trim. For barndominiums I coordinate with electrical, plumbing, and HVAC subs so the rough-in lands before you finish the interior. One contract, one schedule, one person to call.
Eave height drives what you can put inside — 12' for trucks and RVs, 14–16' for car lifts or RV with rooftop AC, 10' for living space. Doors: 12'x14' for RV bays, 10'x10' for shops, 8'x8' for compact storage. Insulation: spray foam on the underside of the roof keeps a Texas shop usable in summer. Spec it once, right, before the slab is poured.
Most counties in our area require engineered drawings stamped by a Texas PE for any building over a certain size. Building suppliers provide these as part of the kit. I pull the permit, schedule inspections, and hand you the closed-out paperwork at the end.
