Poured concrete is the cheapest and fastest — broom finish for a clean modern look, or stamped to mimic stone or brick. Pavers (concrete or clay) cost more but won't crack across the slab; if one shifts, you pull and reset that piece. Flagstone is the most expensive and the most beautiful — natural Oklahoma or Pennsylvania stone laid on a mortar bed or dry-set in decomposed granite. I'll match the choice to your house and your budget.
San Antonio sits on expansive clay soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. A 4" slab poured directly on dirt will crack inside a year. I excavate 6–8", lay 4" of compacted base rock, then pour 4" of concrete with #3 rebar on chairs (not just wire mesh laying on the ground). Control joints get cut at the right intervals so the concrete cracks where I want it to, not across your finish.
Every patio I build slopes away from the house at 1/8" per foot minimum. If your yard pools water, we add a French drain or surface drain into the design before the pour. Patios that hold water are how foundations and slabs go bad.
Fire pits (gas or wood), seating walls with cap stones, integrated planters, low-voltage lighting, and pergola footings can all be designed into the patio from day one. Cheaper to do at pour than to bolt on later.
